Welcoming Shivang Pandey: A New PhD Student in Our Team

Background

We are delighted to welcome Shivang Pandey to our team as a PhD student. Shivang is a  data science expert with a focus on climate and sustainability and a passionate of Earth observation. He holds a Master’s degree in Geoinformatics from the Faculty of ITC, University of Twente, in the Netherlands, where his research concentrated on snow estimation using spatio-temporal datasets in the Indian Himalayas. He also holds a Bachelor’s degree in Electronics and Communication Engineering from Indraprastha University in Delhi.

Shivang has gained extensive experience working across academia, international organisations, and industry, contributing to diverse projects that address global challenges and advance humanitarian efforts. Among others, he has contributed to various impactful projects as a consultant for the United Nations Development Programme. His work has spanned across Artificial Intelligence , geospatial data analysis, and environmental monitoring, reflecting a commitment to making a meaningful impact on critical global issues.

Just Completed: Research in Uppsala

Before joining our team, Shivang worked at Uppsala University as a Research Assistant, where he developed machine learning models to estimate snow depth using integrated satellite and climate datasets. This research aimed to address challenges in managing hydropower resources and preparing for extreme weather events, aligning with Sweden’s zero net-emission goals. His expertise in leveraging environmental data for climate adaptation perfectly complements our research focus.

Vision and Plan for His PhD

In his PhD, Shivang plans to explore how advanced geospatial and data science methods can be utilized to understand the impact of extreme temperatures on population health. As part of the DATE and ADATES projects, he will leverage his expertise in machine learning and climate data integration to develop a novel modeling framework and quantify the health impacts of hydroclimate extremes, such as floods and heatwaves, while considering adaptation actions.

A key element of his research involves creating a machine learning model to simulate the causal dynamics of heatwave events, capturing the interplay between heatwave characteristics (e.g., temperature), socio-economic drivers (e.g., average age and income at the geographical area level), and adaptation measures. By integrating data Sweden and past heatwaves in Europe, the framework aims to assess how adaptations actions influence health outcomes, such as mortality and cardiovascular diseases.

This innovative approach will provide valuable insights into the health impacts of heatwaves, helping to inform effective adaptation strategies. Shivang envisions integrating cutting-edge geospatial technologies with interdisciplinary collaboration to generate actionable insights, shaping policies and improving resilience to climate challenges.

We are excited to see Shivang’s contributions and are confident that he will bring innovation and dedication to this vital research area. Welcome aboard, Shivang!
